It’s Clasico Capitalino time! Pumas biggest rival, Club America, runs across town to face off against Pumas after a week off in Liga MX thanks to the referee strike. In an always exciting clash, the two Mexico City sides will fight for playoff positioning and should provide a “game of the week” type effort.
Is this the week Juan Francisco Palencia finally gives Nicolas Castillo and Matias Britos the joint start? It seems likely as Pumas struggled to create offense in their last game against Santos until Britos entered. Castillo is off to a roaring start, leading the league in goals scored with six. It will be interesting to see how he plays against America, as Castillo appears ready to play in the spotlight of such an important match.
Pumas will need to ensure their defense is tight, and fix the evident problems on the back line. In their last four games, the defense has leaked 10 goals. Dario Veron, who always shows up for this rivalry, is the key to the defense. The 37-year old could potentially be playing in his last Capital Classic as surely retirement is within sight.
HEAD TO HEAD FUN FACTS
Pumas have only lost one league home game under Palencia’s leadership, but America isn’t impressed. In the last 10 games at Pumas’ stadium, America has six wins, outscoring Pumas 15-8.
