Pumas earned an important three points in the liguilla race with a commanding 3-0 win over Jaguares on Saturday night. It was Jesus Gallardo’s night as the young winger scored two goals and added an assist to Matias Britos on the evening.
The initial 45 minutes of the match were slow, with little pressure from either side, leaving fans to wonder what the second half would have in store. But Gallardo woke up Pumas fans in the first minute of stoppage time with a nice give and go passing sequence with Bryan Rabello that ended with Gallardo firing a shot past Moises Munoz for a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The second half was more controlled, with Pumas putting massive pressure on Munoz throughout the rest of the match. While the Jaguares keeper made some great saves – nine in total for the match – Pumas eventually added to their lead in the 67th minute when Gallardo found Britos streaking into the box and Britos fired it past Munoz.
In the 86th minute, Gallardo scored again, this time courtesy of a nice pass by Alan Mendoza, who sent a perfectly timed long ball over the back line. Gallardo had defenders racing behind, but was able to shoot the ball past Munoz.
After the rest of Saturday’s games were played, Pumas sat in sixth in the league table with 17 points.
Pumas will face Toluca (6-3-1, 19 points) at home next Sunday.
